Vestry Meeting Minutes

A meeting of the Parochial Church Council was held in the Parish Hall on Thursday evening April the 12th at 7.30 p.m. subsequent to a Vestry & Parochial Electors meeting.

1. The accounts of special collections with vouchers were submitted by the chairman. He stated that he said accounts had been audited by a competent accountant & published in the Magazine.

2. The churchwardens accounts were submitted by Mr F. Kingham. He stated that they ran from the Period Easter 1927 to Easter 1928. It was agreed to accept the accounts for this period but that in future the statement should cover the period from Jan 1st to December 31st in each year. The account showed a deficit of £2. for which...

Balance Repair Church £21.8.3. Ilmer Close Fund 19/11½.

...the vicar made himself responsible. The chairman reported that the account for Repair Church & Ilmer Close Fund had been passed & accepted by the Charity Commissioners.

3. A letter was submitted from Mr Albert Goodchild offering to install Electric light in the church. The letter was as follows:

3 Talgarth Mansions, Kensington W14. Feb 21st 1928.

Dear Mr Tuke,

With ref. our conversation with regard to lighting Ilmer Church, if you care to obtain the necessary permit, I will provide and fix the necessary wires, Cables & Fittings and supply the necessary currant. This supply of course will be subject to my plants being in working order. Further I do not guarantee that any successor of mine will maintain this supply, but I don't think you need let this point have much weight, I feel sure there will be no successor who will refuse it once it is instaled.

With regard to shrubs for the Churchyard, if you will have the big trees cut down I will supply shrubs to give the Churchyard more or less a furnished appearance. I should like to hear from you as soon as possible particularly with regard to trees, as there is not much time left this season for planting shrubs.

Dear Mr Tuke,

I have been expecting to hear further from you with regard to lighting the Church. It's now twelve months since I offered to do this work, and if you really want the light let us get on with the job. I cannot move further in the matter until you have obtained the sanction. I shall be going to Town for the winter in about 5 weeks and I should like to see this work completed before I go.

The light is also wanted in the parish room. this I have offered to supply, but as I told you I don't want the expence of running two seperate wires. It is also necessary to improve the heating of the parish room. the stove at present in the room is quite out of order, and cannot be used. I propose to building in an open Fire, which will take up much less room and be more cheerfull.

After some discussion it was agreed on the motion of Mr S.G. Boswell seconded by Mr F Kingham to accept this offer with very sincere thanks, and the vicar was instructed to apply for a faculty form.

4. The second part of Mr Goodchild's letter referred to the cutting down of the Poplar trees in the churchyard & to the replanting the ground with shrubs. The offer was again accepted and the vicar was instructed to obtain the necessary permission from the Diocesan Dilapidations Board.

5. Some informal discussion ensued on the position of the ownership of the Parish Hall but no conclusion was arrived at.

This was all the business.
