This is the last Will and Testament
of me Moreton John Edward Frewen of 31 Sussex Square Brighton
Revoking all former Wills and Codicils by me made Imprimis I give and devise
my copyhold farm and lands situate in the Parish of Great Bentley in the County
of Essex together with the great tithes thereof to the use of my relation John Jenkin
now or late of Stouting in Kent and his heirs and assigns for ever because he was
a good son to his Father and as for and concerning all such of my lands and
hereditaments situate in the Parish of Beckley in the County of Sussex as are of
copyhold tenure I confirm my Fathers Will in respect thereof and subject thereto I
devise the same To the use of Charles Francis Lord of Hampstead Surgeon and his
heirs and assigns for ever And as for and concerning my manor or reputed manor
of Ilmer or Illmire and all my farms lands tenements tithes and hereditaments
situate in the Parishes of Ilmer or Illmire Saunderton and Kingsey or elsewhere in
the County of Bucks I give and devise the same To the use of my dear Wife Sarah
Frewen for and during the term of her natural life without impeachment of waste
voluntary or permissive of any sort or kind whatever with power to my said Wife
to make leases or agreements for leases at rack rent of the same or any part or
parts thereof for any term or terms not exceeding fourteen years and a day and to
commence or to be computed either from the day of the execution thereof respectively or
some day prior to or within six calendar months after the same And from and
after the decease of my said Wife I give and devise my said manor or reputed
manor and all my farms lands tenements tithes and hereditaments in the County of
Bucks To the use of Frances Annabella Moreton Craigie eldest daughter of my late
uncle the Reverend William Moreton Moreton of Westerham in Kent for and during
the term of her natural life for her own exclusive use and benefit apart and distinct
from her present or any future husband and not to be subject to his debts controul or
engagements without impeachment of waste as aforesaid and with like power to
her to make leases or agreements for leases And from and after her decease I give
and devise the same manor or reputed manor farms lands and hereditaments
in the County of Bucks To the use of her sister Elizabeth Moreton for and during the
term of her natural life for her own exclusive use and benefit apart and distinct

from any husband she may marry and not to be subject to his debts controul
or engagements without impeachment of waste as aforesaid and with like
power to make leases or agreements for leases And from and after the decease
of the survivor of the said sisters To the use of the first and other son and sons of
the said Frances Annabella Moreton Craigie in tail general severally successively
and in remainder one after another according to priority of birth and in default
of such issue To the use of her first and other daughter and daughters in tail
general severally successively and in remainder one after another according to
priority of birth and in default of such issue To the use of the first and other son
and sons of the said Elizabeth Moreton in tail general severally successively
and in remainder one after another according to priority of birth And in default
of such issue To the use of the first and other daughter and daughters of the said
Elizabeth Moreton in tail general severally successively and in remainder
according to priority of birth And in default of all such issue To the use of my
relation Thomas Frewen of Brickwall House in the County of Sussex Esqr for and
during the term of his natural life without impeachment of any manner of waste
as aforesaid and with like power to make leases or agreements for leases as afore-
said And from and after his decease To the use of his daughter Eleanor Frewen
her heirs and assigns for ever for her separate use and benefit apart and distinct
from any husband she may marry and not to be subject to his debts controul or
engagements And as for and concerning my farm lands and hereditaments in the
Parish of Remenham or elsewhere in the County of Berks I give and devise the
same To the use of my dear Wife the said Sarah Frewen for and during the term
of her natural life without impeachment of waste as aforesaid and with like
power to make leases or agreements for leases as aforesaid And from and after her
decease To the use of my relation Charles Hay Frewen late of Coghurst in the County
of Sussex Esquire and his heirs and assigns for ever And as for and concerning my
farm lands and hereditaments situate in the Parish of Icklesham in the County
of Sussex I give and devise the same To the use of John Frewen eldest son of the
aforesaid Thomas Frewen his heirs and assigns for ever but subject to and
charged with the annuity or rent charge hereinafter mentioned and charged
upon the same And as for and concerning my house lands and hereditaments
called Farthings situate in the Parish of Northiam in the County of Sussex And
also all such of my lands and hereditaments situate in the Parish of Beckley
aforesaid as are of freehold tenure except the undivided moiety of lands and
hereditaments late the property of the late Sarah Chittenden of Hawkhurst in

the County of Kent deceased and also my farm called Strawberry Hole in
Northiam aforesaid and all other my lands ^cottages^ gardens and hereditaments situate
in Northiam aforesaid I give and devise the same except the undivided moiety
hereinbefore excepted To the use of my said Wife Sarah Frewen her heirs and assigns
for ever And I give and bequeath to Mary Ann Plumley daughter of John Plumley
late of Northiam aforesaid the annuity or yearly sum of twenty pounds for and
during the term of her natural life free and clear from legacy duty by even and
equal half yearly payments on the nineteenth day of January and the nineteenth
day of July in every year the first of such payments to be made on such one of the
said days as shall as shall happen next after my decease and I charge this same
annuity upon my farm lands and hereditaments situate at Icklesham aforesaid
And as concerning the personal estate with which it has pleased the Almighty to bless
me I confirm the right of my said Wife if she survives me to take as survivor such
part and parts thereof as stand in her name jointly with my own and as to the
residue of my personal estate standing in my own name only I give and bequeath
the same subject to the payment of my debts funeral expences and the legacies herein-
after mentioned to my said dear Wife my will and pleasure being that the said
bequest and the devises to her hereinbefore contained shall be in lieu bar and satis-
faction of all her right to dower or thirds by common law statute or otherwise and
also of all claims ^which^ she may have under my Fathers Will And I give and
bequeath to my Wifes Housekeeper Jane Jarrett Widow the annuity or yearly sum

of twenty six pounds for and during the term of her natural life free and clear
from legacy duty And I give and bequeath unto my cousin the said Charles
Hay Frewen the sum of Five Hundred pounds And I nominate constitute and
appoint the said Charles Hay Frewen and my said Wife Executor and Executrix
of this my Will Witness my hand this sixteenth day of May in the year of our Lord

named Moreton John Edward Frewen as and for his last Will and Testament in
the presence of us who in his presence and that of each other have hereunto set our
names as witnesses hereto – Arthur Walton Cornwall Clerk Midhurst,
Edward Tufnell Clerk, Easebourne, Sussex –

THIS is a Codicil to be added to and taken as part of the last Will and
Testament of me Moreton John Edward Frewen I hereby constitute and
appoint the Revd Henry Jenkins of Stanway near Colchester Essex Brother to my dear
deceased Wife to be my joint Executor with Charles Hay Frewen And I give and
bequeath to him the sum of Ten thousand pounds ^New^ Bradford Stock And I give
and bequeath to my House keeper Jane Jarrett Widow the annuity or yearly sum
of Seventy pounds in lieu of and instead of the annuity of Twenty six pounds which
I hereby revoke for and during the term of her natural life free and clear from
legacy duty if she continues my House keeper till the time of my decease Witness
my hand this eighteenth day of February in the year of our Lord 1869 – Moreton

Proved at London with a Codicil 19th June 1871 by the oath of Charles Hay Frewen
Esqre the surviving Executor named in the Will and the Revd Henry Jenkins Clerk
(the Brother of Testator's late Wife) the Executor named in the said Codicil to whom
Admon was granted.
