In the Name of God Amen I John Bowden of Ilmer in the County of Bucks yeo[man]
being of Sound & disposeing Minde & Memory praised be God But being Mindfull of
My Mortality doe this p[re]sent that I may not Departe this life without haveing
first setled & ordered things according to my mind Doe therefore make & ordaine
this my last Will & Testamt: in Manner following Comitting then my Soule into
the hands of Almighty God hopeing for Salvation through Jesus Christ my Redeemer
And appointing my body to be decently buryed at the Discretion of my Executrix
herein after named as touching the goods & worldly Estate wherewith it hath
pleased Almighty God to blesse me I dispose of the same as followeth Imprimis I
give & Devise unto Anne my loveing wife for & dureing the Terme of her naturall
life All that my Messuage or Tenemt: with the appurten[an]ces wherein I now
dwell scituate & being in Ilmer aforesd: in the said County of Bucks & all &
every the houses Edifices Buildings Barnes Stables Outhouses Yards Orchards
Gardens & Backsides whatsoever to the said Messuage or Tenemt: belonging used or
in any wise app[er]teyning And alsoe all & every my ffreehold Closes peices &
p[ar]cells of Arrable Land Meadow pasture & Ley ground whatsoever with their &
every of their appurten[an]ces lyeing & being within the p[ar]ishes of Ilmer
aforesd: Saunderton & Kingsey or either of them in the said County of Bucks &
Conteyning altogether by Estimac[i]on ffifty Acres be the same more or lesse
Item my Will is And I doe hereby give & Devise unto My Daughter Anne the now
wife of William Woolven One Annuity or yearly Rent Charge of Tenn pounds of good
& Lawfull money of Great Brittain without any manner of Defalcac[i]on or
abatemt: to be made thereof or of any p[ar]te or p[ar]cell thereof for by reason
of or in Liew of any Taxes Assessmts: or other Charges whatsoever Imposed or to
be Imposed on the Lands or on the said Rent or Annuity by any Act or Acts of
Parliamt: or otherwise howsoever the said Annuity or yearly Rent Charge of Tenn
pounds to be yearly yssueing & goeing out of all & every my said Messuage Closes
Lands Tenemts: Meadow pasture Ley ground & hereditamts: & p[re]misses herein
before menconed & to be by her my said Daughter had held received p[er]ceived
taken & enjoyed from & Imediately after the Decease of her the said Anne my wife
for & dureing the Naturall life of her the said Anne my Daughter & to be paid
unto her my said Daughter or her Assignes at foure usuall ffeasts or dayes of
paymt: in the yeare (that is to say) at the ffeasts of St: Michaell the
ArchAngell, the Nativity of o[u]r: Saviour Christ The Annunciac[i]on of the
blessed Virgin Mary & the Nativity of St: John the Baptist by even & equall
porc[i]ons the ffirst paymt: thereof to be made at such of the said ffeasts as
shall first & next happen after the decease of her the said Anne my wife Item my
Will is And I doe hereby further Devise & appoint That if it shall happen the
said yearly Rent of Tenn pounds or any p[ar]te thereof to be behind or unpaid in
p[ar]te or in all by the space of Twenty dayes next over or after any of the
said ffeasts or dayes of paymt: on which as


Aforesd: the same ought to be paid That then & soo often & at all times from
thenceforth it shall & may be Lawfull to & for the said Anne my Daughter & her
Assignes into all & every my said Messuage Closes Lands Tenemts: Meadow pasture
Ley grounds hereditamts: & p[re]misses aforemenconed & into every p[ar]te &
p[ar]cell thereof to Enter & Distreyne & the Distresse & Distresses soe there &
from time to time to be had & found to take lead Drive & Carry away & Impound &
in pound to deteyne & keepe untill the said Annuity or yearly Rent Charge of
Tenn pounds with the Arrearages thereof if any be shall be fully satisfyed &
payed ITEM from & after the decease of the said Anne my wife (saveing reserveing
& preserving the said yearly Rent of Tenn pounds unto & for the said Anne my
Daughter with the power & meanes of obteyning thereof according to the purport &
Intent of this my Will) I doe hereby give Will & Devise all & every my said
Messuage Closes Lands Tenemts: Meadow pasture Ley ground hereditamts: &
p[re]misses herein before menconed with their & every of their appurten[an]ces
unto my Loveing ffriends William Woolven of West Grimsted in the County of
Sussex yeom my son in Law George ffranklyn the Elder of Haddenham in the County
of Bucks aforesd: yeom & Edward Stone the younger of Princes Risborough in the
same County yeom their Exec[uto]rs: Adm[inistrato]rs: & Assignes for & dureing
the Terme of six yeares to be Accompted from the time of the Decease of the said
Anne my wife fully to be Compleat & ended if John Woolven my Grandson sonne of
my said Daughter Anne shall soe long live Upon Speciall Trust & Confidence
neverthelesse in them the said William Woolven George ffranklyn & Edward Stone &
the Survivour & Survivours of them & the Executours & Adm[inistrato]rs: of the
Survivour of them by me reposed & to the Intent & purpose That they the said
William Woolven George ffranklyn & Edward Stone & the Survivour & Survivours of
them & the Exec[uto]rs: & Adm[inistrato]rs: of the Survivour of them shall &
will yearly dureing the Continuance of the said Terme of six yeares out of the
Rents & proffitts of my said Messuage Lands & p[re]misses pay & satisfye the
said Annuity or yearly Rent Charge of Tenn pounds unto my said Daughter (if she
soe long live) at such dayes & in such Manner as the same is herein before
menconed or appointed to be paid And dureing the Continuance of the said Terme
as aforesd: shall & will alsoe pay & dispose of all the rest & residue of the
Rents & proffitts of my said Messuage Lands & p[re]misses unto & for my said
Grandsonne John Woolven to & for his sole & only use & benefitt & in
p[ar]ticular that Twelve pounds yearly of the same proffitts (after paymt: of
the said Annuity) be by my said Trustees paid & applyed to & for the placeing
out & Mainteyning of my said Grandsonne at Schoole And from & after the
expirac[i]on or other determinac[i]on of the said Estate & Terme for six yeares
Then my Will is And I doe hereby give & Devise all & every my said Messuage
Closes Lands Tenemts: Meadow pasture Ley ground hereditamts: & p[re]misses with
their & every of their appurten[an]ces unto the said John Woolven my said
Grandsonne & to the heires of his body Lawfully begotten & to be begotten & for
Default of such Issue then I doe further


Give & Devise All my said Messuage Lands Tenemts: & p[re]misses aforemenconed
with their & every of their appurten[an]ces unto them the said William Woolven
George ffranklyn & Edward Stone their Exec[uto]rs: Adm[inistrato]rs: & Assignes
for & dureing the Terme of seaven yeares to be accompted from the time of the
Decease of my said Grandsonne soe Dyeing without Issue as aforesd: fully to be
Compleat & ended Under & Subject neverthelesse to the Trust Condic[i]ons &
Limitac[i]ons herein after menconed concerning the same Terme & Estate for
seaven yeares And from & after the end & expirac[i]on or other determinac[i]on
of the said Estate & Terme for seaven yeares Then my Will is And I doe hereby
give & Devise All my said Messuage Closes Lands Tenemts: Meadowes pasture Ley
ground hereditamts: & p[re]misses with their & every of their appurten[an]ces
unto William Slater als[o] Cossendon sonne of my late Sister Anne & to the
heires & Assignes of the said William Slater als[o] Cossendon for ever = And as
to the said Estate & Terme for seaven yeares soe herein before by me Limited &
Devised unto them the said William Woolven George ffranklyn & Edward Stone their
Exec[uto]rs: Adm[inistrato]rs: & Assignes It is the true Intent & meaneing of
this my Will & I doe hereby Declare that the said Terme & Estate for seaven
yeares is Upon speciall Trust & Confidence & to the Intent & purpose that they
the said William Woolven George ffranklyn & Edward Stone & the Survivour &
Survivours of them & the Exec[uto]rs: & Adm[inistrato]rs: of the Survivour of
them shall & will as soone as Conveniently may be by with & out of the Rents
Issues & proffitts of all the said Messuage Lands Tenemts: & p[re]misses herein
before menconed Levy raise & pay the severall sumes of Money herein following
(that is to say) the sume of fforty pounds of good & Lawfull money of Great
Brittaine unto & for Ann Bowden Daughter of my late Brother William Bowden
deceased & the sume of Twenty pounds a peice of like Money unto & for all the
Children of my late Sister Elizabeth Winch deceased late wife of Thomas Winch
And upon this further Trust And my Will & Intent is that as soone as the said
Legacyes or sumes of fforty pounds for the said Ann Bowden my said late Brothers
Daughter & of Twenty pounds a peice for my said Sister Winches Children shall be
Levyed & raised Or in Case the said William Slater als[o] Cossendon his heires
or Assignes shall within two yeares next after my said Messuage Lands &
p[re]misses shall come to him or them by vertue of this my Will well & truely
pay & discharge the same That then they the said William Woolven George
ffranklyn & Edward Stone their Exec[uto]rs: Adm[inistrato]rs: & Assignes shall &
will at the reasonable Request & p[ro]per Costs & Charges of him the said
William Slater als[o] Cossendon his heires or Assignes surrender & yeild up all
theire said Terme & Estate for seaven yeares & pay & dispose of all Moneys by
them to be raised or received by & out of the proffitts of the said p[re]misses
in the last menconed Terme (& not disposed of according to this my Will) unto
him the said William Slater als[o] Cossendon his heires & Assignes Provided
always & I doe hereby further Will & appoint that it shall & may be Lawfull to &
for them the said William Woolven George


ffranklyn & Edward Stone their Exec[uto]rs: Adm[inistrato]rs: & Assignes from
time to time to Deduct & take to themselves all their reasonable Costs & Charges
to satisfye & reimburse themselves out of my said Estate All Taxes & other
expences as they shall necessarily Disburse & expend or be put unto in or about
the Managemt: of the p[re]misses or the Execuc[i]on or Defence of any of the
Trusts aforesd: And that None of them shall be accomptable for any more of the
proffitts of the said Messuage Lands & p[re]misses than what shall come to
theire hands severally & respectively & that none of them shall be Chargeable or
Accountable for any [crossed out word] Deed or Receipt of the other of them (any
thing in this my Will Conteyned to the Contrary thereof in any wise
notwithstanding Item I give & Devise unto the said Anne my wife all & every my
Leasehold Lands & Tenemts: whatsoever which I hold by force & vertue of any
Lease or Leases thereof made by the right honourable Charles Earle of Carnarvan
scituate lyeing & being in the p[ar]ish of Ilmer aforesd: in the said County of
Bucks To have & to hold unto her the said Anne my wife for & dureing soe many
yeares of the Terme or Termes of yeares that I have thereof & therein as
aforesd: as shall runne & be Elapsed dureing the Naturall life of her the said
Anne my wife yet alwayes under & subject to the Rents & Coven[an]ts: Reserved &
Conteyned in such Lease on my part & behalfe to be done & p[er]formed And from &
after the Decease of her the said Anne my wife (In Case the said Lease or Leases
be not then expired) then my Will is & I doe hereby give & Devise All my
Leasehold p[re]misses aforesd: unto the said John Woolven my said Grandson To
have & to hold to him his Exec[uto]rs: Adm[inistrato]rs: & Assignes for &
dureing soe many yeares of my Terme or Termes of yeares aforesd: then to come &
unexpired as shall runne & Elapse dureing the life & lives of the said John
Woolven & of the Issue of his body Lawfully to be begotten if any be Yet with &
under such Rents & Coven[an]ts: as aforesd: And in Case the said John Woolven
shall happen to dye & Issue of his body to faile & not be before the
expirac[i]on of the Lease or Leases to me made as aforesd: Then my Will is & I
doe hereby give & Devise all my said Leasehold Lands p[re]misses & all the rest
& residue of my Terme & Termes of yeares as shall be thereof or therein then to
come & unexpired unto him the said William Slater als[o] Cossendon his
Exec[uto]rs: Adm[inistrato]rs: & Assignes yet likewise under & with the same
Rents & Coven[an]ts: aforemenconed ITEM I doe make ordaine & appoint her the
said Anne my wife sole Executrix of this my last Will & Testamt: And doe give
her all my Goods Cattell Chattells & p[er]sonall Estate whatsoever
(unbequeathed) she paying my debts & ffunerall expences & alsoe paying unto
William Bowden sonne of my said late Brother William the sume of one shilling &
alsoe to Thomas Bowry sonne of my late Sister Katherine the like sume of one
shilling IN WITNESSE whereof I the said John Bowden the Testator unto this my
last Will & Testamt: Revokeing all former Wills by me made have to this my last
Conteyned & expressed in two sheetes of paper & halfe of a Third sheete to each


of the said sheetes sett my hand & seale the Eighteenth day of September in the
Tenth yeare of the Reigne of o[u]r Soveraigne Lady Anne by the grace of God of
Great Brittaine ffrance & Ireland Queene Defendor of the ffaith &c Annoq[ue]

Testator in the p[re]sence of us the witnesses whose names are hereunder written
& who hereunto have subscribed in the p[re]sence of the Testator (vizt:) Thomas
Young George Chapman Joseph Monday. ITEM my further Will is And I doe hereby
give & Devise unto my Maid Mary Bastian who now lives with me the sume of five
pounds yearly for the Terme of foure yeares for her yearly wages to live with my
said Executrix Anne my wife at & dureing to be paid by my said Executrix yearly
dureing her life And in Case my said Executrix should not soe long live then for
the Terme which is to come & unexpired After her decease to live in the my said
Messuage or Tenemt: at her uses & the said sume to be Levyed & raised out of my
said Lands & p[re]misses And in Case my said Executrix should not be willing she
should live with her or my Exec[uto]rs: or Assignes in this my said Messuage or
Tenemt: then my Will is & I doe hereby give & Devise unto the said Mary Bastian
the sume of Twenty pounds to be paid by my Executrix at the end of the said
Terme of foure yeares Or in Case my said Executrix should not soe long live then
the said sume of Twenty pounds to be Levyed & raised out of my said Lands &
p[re]misses IN WITNESSE whereof I have hereunto sett my hand & seale the same
day & yeare above written. John Bowden Signed sealed published & Declared by the
above sd: Testator in the p[re]sence of us the Witnesses whose names are
hereunder written & who hereunto have subscribed in the p[re]sence of the
Testator (vizt:) the marke of Thomas Greenwood the marke of Joyce Gowin Joseph

By the tenor of these presents, We, Thomas Ayloffe, Doctor of Laws, Commissary,
etc., and Official lawfully constituted in and throughout the whole Archdeaconry
of Bucks, make known to all men that on the seventeenth day of the month of
December in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eleven, before
us [and others] lawfully proceeding, the above-written Will of John Bowden, late
of Ilmer in the Archdeaconry of Bucks, deceased, was proved, and by him approved
and registered, and duly and lawfully pronounced and declared for the force and
validity of the same;

And the burden of the execution of the said Will, as well as the Administration,
etc., of [all] and singular the goods, rights, credits, and [chattels] of the
said deceased, pertaining to him at the [time] of his death and remaining within
the aforesaid Archdeaconry, and in any way concerning this [testament], was
committed to Anne Bowden, Relict (widow) of the said deceased and the Executrix
named in the same Will, she, the said Anne Bowden, having taken the oath
according to the Act of Parliament published and provided in that behalf (by
virtue of a Commission made in that behalf), saving the right of whomsoever.

In testimony whereof we have caused the seal which we use [in this behalf] to be
affixed to these presents. Given on the day, month, and year [aforesaid].
