Parish Meeting Minutes - 29 Jan 1973

Minutes of the Longwick-cum-Ilmer Parish Meeting on 29th Jan 1973.

PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS STREET LIGHTING WAS HELD IN LONGWICK VILLAGE HALL ON MONDAY 29TH JANUARY 1973 AT 8.00 P.M.

The Chairman Cllr. James Walker addressed a meeting of approx sixty people to discuss the principles of street lighting, as the village was rapidly growing the council thought it time to know if residents thought it a good or bad thing to have lighting in the village.

The lighting would have to be to footway standard which is 35 watt lamps on standards 16' High and spaced at 40 yds apart, to provide this it would take 107 standards, 27 of these would be installed free by developers, leaving the council to install 80 at a cost of £60 per unit, capital cost around £5,000 maintenance would cost £6.35 per unit making £700 per year, on a repayment of £500 per year on money borrowed cost would be approx £1,200 per year, an estimated increase of 4p in the pound to the ratepayer.

Reaction was mixed and varied, some residents thought that hooliganism would be encouraged, and that lights would be another step to the end of Longwick as a village, encouraging further development, and faster traffic, while others thought the elderly would benefit, while children out at night would cause less concern to their parents, one suggestion was that the estates should be wired up and lit when required.

Due to the varied opinions a vote was

called for resulting in 20 being in favour of full lighting, 19 were in favour of selective lighting such as Telephone Kiosk, school, and Village Hall, 12 were against any form of lighting at all, as a result the Chairman decided to call another meeting for the end of March with a view to having more knowledge of facts, and put the question again.
