Religious Census
The 1851 Religious Census was a one-day government inquiry into places of worship and the numbers attending them, conducted on Sunday 30 March alongside the population census. It was held so Parliament could assess the country’s religious provision amid concern that church accommodation was not keeping pace with population growth, and to compare attendance across denominations.
